How to Make Cotton Masks

When the first Covid-19 Isolation took place, back in March, I made a total of 1436 masks for medical professionals and community members.

With mandatory mask ordinances happening around the country, and two ply cotton masks having been found to be the most effective, I wanted to share my simple way for making masks. There are fancier masks out there. This is how to make a simple surgical mask.

This is not the hospital pattern, they insert disposable filters.

Make sure you are using 100% cotton when making your masks. If you are in Green Bay you can support a local small business by purchasing you cloth at My Favorite Quilt Shop. The owner is very helpful and great with kids.

Step 1. Cut metal floral wire 2 inches long. Bend the ends so they don’t stab through cloth.

Step 2: Cut cloth: Cut 16×11 for adults.. Cut 12×9 for kids

Step 3: This step is optional. I placed washable filters inside each of my masks. Cut filters. 6×9 kids, 8×11 adult.

Step 4.

Option A: Cut 17in ties

Option B: Cut 7in elastic

Option C: Cut 37in straps

Step 5: Fold cloth in half. Glue in nose piece. Only 3 drops of glue. One on the middle and 1 on each end.

Step 6:. Sew in filter by sewing it between the folded cloth.

Step 7. Pin in 3 folds.

Step 8.

Option A. Cut ribbon, fold around mask and sew in ties.

Option B. Cut ribbon and sew each end of elastic into corners. Done.

Option C. Make straps and sew mask in center.
